MSS Annual Meeting Mentorship Program

The MSS Meeting Mentor program pairs student attendees with experienced MSS Members. We are looking for both mentors and mentees for the 2019 conference in Chicago, IL, April 17-20.

Requests are due by March 15, 2019.

Who can Participate in the Mentorship Program?

Mentorship applicants must be registered to attend the MSS Annual Meeting.

Mentees should be student members who are registered for the annual meeting.  Undergraduate students may be paired with senior graduate students. Mentors should be senior graduate students, faculty members, or other professional sociologists who are registered for the annual meeting.

 

How do I get Matched with a Mentor/Mentee?

Mentors and mentees will be paired as closely as possible based on research interests and similar experiences in academia. All are welcome! Please note that our ability to place mentors and mentees may be limited; some applicants may be put on a waiting list. Mentors and mentees will be notified of their status around April 1.

Please be sure that your membership profile is updated so we can provide accurate contact information to your mentor/mentee. 

 

Mentor/Mentee Expectations:

  1. Mentors will contact their mentee via email prior to the conference. The email should include information for the mentee regarding who you are and a bit about yourself. 
  2. The Mentors and Mentees should agree on a place and time to meet in person early in the conference.
  3. It is appropriate for mentees to prepare a few questions in advance for their mentor about areas of interest and networking. 
  4. Mentors will share reflections on their experiences at the MSS Annual conference and try to introduce mentees to other advanced graduate students and professional sociologists. The point is to develop strategies for making the most out of attending this conference.
  5. Some mentors and mentees stay in contact after the conference, but this is not an expectation.
