2019 Undergraduate Scholars Program

During the meetings in Chicago, the MSS will be piloting a new program designed to enhance the experience for undergraduate students attending and presenting at the annual meetings. This series of sessions is called the Undergraduate Scholars Program (USP) and is open to the first 25 undergraduates who apply. The goal is to provide an orientation just for undergrads, a chance to meet others, special sessions to promote sociology as an undergraduate career, and gain insight into how a long term USP might be institutionalized.

Why do this?

We hope this coordinated effort to help undergraduates meet students from other schools, learn about sociology among their peers, have resources and people specifically looking out for you, and enjoying some snacks and swag will be of interest. Students completing all the requirements will receive a formal letter from MSS which can be listed on resumes (Undergraduate Scholars Program Participant) and reflects well on the engagement of the student and the department.

Please do not apply unless you are able to commit to completing all 4 requirements. Applications are due April 1st but will close once 25 complete applications are received. Since this is a pilot year, we have decided to limit the number of participants.

Requirements for application:

Undergraduates must be on the official program—roundtable, poster, paper co-author/author, undergraduate award winner.

A faculty member must be identified who knows of your interest and supports this opportunity. They will be sent confirming information and a copy of the letter recognizing your participation.

Requirements of the USP program:

1 Attend the Orientation Session in Student Suite on Thursday at 8:00 am.

2. Make your presentation at the appropriate slot in the program.

3. Attend one additional plenary or student focused session. A list of options will be provided at the orientation. Plenty of schedule openings should still be possible for students to attend other sessions of interest.

4. Attend the USP Final Session (Two options-choose one) Friday at 3:00 pm in Regency B or Saturday morning at 8:00am in the Student Suite. This important session will provide an opportunity for reflection, feedback and celebration. You need to indicate which session on your application, so we can plan accordingly.
